Young Harris College was started in 1886 as the McTyeire Institute with the purpose of providing the first and only educational opportunities to the residents of the isolated area in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Today, Young Harris College is a private, four year division II Methodist-affiliated liberal arts college. The current president is Cathy Cox, former Georgia Secretary of State.

Beautiful Brasstown Bald, rising 4,784 feet above sea level, is Georgia's highest mountain. On clear days, the spectacular 360-degree view from atop the mountain allows you to see four states, including Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The surrounding area is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. The Visitor Information Center, located on the summit of the Bald, offers exhibits, video presentations and interpretive programs.
The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds hosts events all year long like great concerts and festivals. Bring your RV or a pitch a tent and stay a while at one of their 189 campsites on the banks of Lake Chatuge. As the Country Music Capital of Georgia, you are sure to hear some of your favorite artists in their intimate venue. The Hal Herrin Estate graciously donated the 18 acre Bell Mountain Summit to Towns County and on February 18, 2016 was formally named Bell Mountain Park and Historical Site and the observation deck erected was named and dedicated as the Hal Herrin Scenic Overlook. Thereafter the County paved the road, established a parking area, and in addition to the Hal Herrin Scenic Overlook erected a 2nd platform rising to 3424 foot of elevation offering 360 degree view of the surrounding lake and mountain views. Lake Chatuge has 7,000 surface acres at full pool and lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia and Western North Carolina. The reservoir was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in 1942. Today Lake Chatuge is operated for many purposes, including flood control, augmentation of flows for navigation, hydropower production, protection of aquatic resources, and recreation. Lake Chatuge hosted the 2014 Bassmaster College Fishing National Championships.
